18/8/08 - Tea Party 9th August Report
We managed to raise £164.25 from the sale of cakes, raffle tickets and bevereges despite the appalling weather but I did sell some at work the previous day as well which raised the first £66. The monies raised are going to be split as £100 to the David Hide Asthma & Allergy research centre based at St
Marys Hospital and the £64.25 going towards the Village Hall Funds. Thanks for your support by the way, much appreciated. Please say thanks to all those who attended and to Ian Ridley for his generous donation and to the lovely
ladies who baked cakes for me.
The 1st prize of the Hamper went to June a St Lawrence resident.

18/8/08 - PEACE GARDEN WORK PARTY 12th AUGUST 2008 Report
Many thanks to the eight stalwart villagers who supported this work party and gave up their morning to carry out essential maintenance work in the Peace Garden.
The weather (unusual this summer) was very kind to us, even hot on occasions and the group managed to weed around most of the individual tree and shrub plantings.
The donated wheel barrow proved to be very useful in transporting weeds to the new compost heap so kindly constructed by Janet and Doug Nettleton.
The good news is that most of the plantings are getting well established, but equally with this rather wet summer so are the weeds!
It was agreed to hold another work party on Tuesday 26th August 10.00-1.00 to continue the weeding tasks. We will not be advertising this one except on the website so do pass this on to anyone who may be prepared to help. You do not need to stay for the whole morning!

16/7/08 - How about a St. Lawrence presence at VENTNOR CARNIVAL this year?
A simple walking entry with the theme:
GALLOPING GARDENERS of ST. LAWRENCE.
We would need a minimum of 10 entrants and 4 wheelbarrows. Wear any costume that brings gardens or gardeners to mind and decorate you
wheelbarrow in any garden related way : the photo is just an idea. It could be full of giant veg, a shed, weeds, snails, gnomes…or even be beautiful.
We would need only one meeting before the carnival.
If you’d like to have a go, please contact Christine on 852 466 before 19th July.
Carnival date: Wednesday 13th August.

Wendy Harris has a launch date for her new novel, Rocken Edge. 29th July at 6.30 pm at Waterstones. All are welcome to help her celebrate and have a glass of wine. There is also a booksigning on 2nd August, late morning, same venue. There will be another local signing at Niton Books (date to be arranged).
This third novel has been published by (www.coachhousepublications.co.uk) and printed (www.crossprint.co.uk) on recycled paper on the Island as Wendy wanted to support the Eco-Island Project. Husband, Terry, took the cover photo which was shot at Binnel Bay.
So as well as encouraging tourism it is very Island-friendly. The whole Undercliff Series is packed with enticing descriptions of The Undercliff from Blackgang to Bonchurch.

7/7/08 - COLLEGE COUNTRYSIDE STUDENTS GET REWARDED FOR WORK ON PEACE GARDEN
Students from the college countryside department who helped create the Peace Garden in St. Lawrence have been rewarded with the gift of a quality digital camera by Doug and Janet Nettleton from St. Lawrence Post Office.

Doug and Janet commented that they wanted to give something long lasting that could be used in the curriculum.
Dave Trevan, course coodinator for National Certificate courses in Horticulture, Countryside and Practical Environmental Studies commented:
“Students on all our courses build portfolios of evidence. Photographs of students carrying out practical activities provide excellent evidence for portfolios that always impress our external verifiers, so the gift of the Fuji Finepix is more than welcome and will be used to gather evidence for students on all courses in the Countryside Department. It will also be used for close up photography of plants and animals”
Doug presented the camera to Pippa Burton, who is a National Certificate Countryside Student, at a ceremony that included all the students who had worked on the Peace Garden.
Also present were college assistant principal Roland White, Rob Mew,countryside section leader, Dave Trevan and John Allen (course coordinators) and Paul Coleman, curriculum technician.
