30/3/09 - Signs of Spring in Pelham Woods

12 islanders joined Dave and Hazel Trevan for a walk as part of the Wight Winter Countryside events on Sunday 29th March. The weather was perfect, blue skies and warm sun.

The walk, which started in the Old Rare Breeds car park included looking at various habitats, management , and interesting plants in Pelham Woods, including Ivy Broomrape, Sweet Violet, Primroses, Yellow Archangel and Wood Anemones.

The group were also shown how to identify some common native trees by looking at the winter twigs.

After the woods the group ascended the cliff path and found a practice ploughing match taking place organised by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust on land adjoining the Rare Field Cow Wheat site.

The objective of the match was to plough land using older lighter tractors and in the long term to encourage old arable weeds like Corn Marigolds to grow on the site.

The group were shown the Field Cow Wheat site, a nationally very rare plant, confined now to only two locations on the Isle of Wight. The group were shown photos of the Field Cow Wheat in flower.

The walk concluded with a look at the Peace Garden, where spring bulbs were making a really good show, and a red squirrel which was spotted in the Stone Pine and performed on cue to delighted walkers!

The walkers made donations to Wight Nature Fund which manage Pelham Woods.

Dave and Hazel will be leading another walk on Sunday 14th June 2009 called “Discover St. Lawrence.” This will take in Charles Wood, Binnel Bay, the coastal footpath and Woody Bay.

Further details can be found in the Wight Summer Walks Booklet

20/1/09- Community Association January Party

The winter party hosted by the Committee Association committee was once again enjoyed by all those villagers who came to chat and see what’s on, in and around St. Lawrence.

A number of organizations including, the Village Hall committee, The Undercliff Society The National Gardens Scheme, Neighbourhood Watch and the Table Tennis club mounted displays of their activities. Rob Reed, our environment and neighbourhood officer, informally introduced himself and explained his role.

Also it was nice to see some newcomers to the village who were made very welcome. The Community Association had their usual photographic display and sold copies of the Village postcard and booklet. They also displayed a “Watch this Space,” poster, of proposed activities for the coming year. These include another party on June 20th and a Pumpkin Festival on October 10th.  So there’s plenty more to look forward to.

19/1/09 - Village Hall News

The Undercliff Singers resume rehearsals on Tuesday January 20th. at 7.30 p.m at the village-hall after a busy month before Christmas. If anyone is interested in joining please contact Pat Collyer on 852936.

The old bell-tower at the village-hall needs restoration, repair or even removal for safety reasons.
Quotations for the cost of the various options are being sought as well as the availability of any financial grants. Whatever is decided will be expensive, over £10,000 at least. What are your views regarding the loss or otherwise of this distinctive land-mark at our village hall?
Please contact Management Committee Secretary Judy Stoneley on 852813 or committee member Vera Scott-Jackson on 730203,e-mail rayscott-jackson4@tiscali.co.uk

It is important that as many opinions as possible are represented.

6/1/09 - Dakota

I have been asked if anyone knows why the Dakota aicraft has been regularly flying very low and slowly from the south recently.

Ed. I noticed it first late December and wondered if it was anything to do with the Dakota that crashed in nearby May 1962 - see http://www.farvis.com/ventnor2.htm for full details.
