16/6/08 - GARDEN GALLOP GREAT SUCCESS.

Nobody galloped. They strolled, meandered, admired the vistas and smelled the roses. About 200 people visited the 9 open gardens and enjoyed tea and home-made cake in the Village Hall. The sun shone and everyone looked to be having a good time.

Visitors came from all over the Island, South Africa, Holland, Germany and Canada. It was a pleasure to share our lovely village with them all.

A slide show of photos from the event can be seen in the Photo Gallery - Click Here.

Thanks to Christine Russell from the Community Assoc. for the report and photo. - The Ed.

1/6/08 - Nature Walk Report

Many Thanks to David Skelsey for sending in the following report on Dave & Hazel Trevan's Nature Walk - The Ed.

NATURE WALK AROUND ST LAWRENCE

SUNDAY 01 JUNE 2008

About a dozen or so residents and visitors were privileged to be led on a fascinating woodland and coastal walk, by Dave and Hazel Travan, who provided expert commentary on the fauna and flora seen.

Starting in Charleswood at the west end of Hunts Road, the diversity of trees and plant life were revealed, as the path meandered down towards Binnel Bay. An abundance of unusual ferns were noted, with other uncommon plants scattered around beneath some fine tree specimens. Dave pointed out that the woods should ideally be properly managed, as sycamores have become the dominant species. However there are a number of ancient and impressive limes and yews, together with other indigenous and non-native varieties.

The path descended towards Binnel Bay passing a large badger set before reaching the beach via a plantation of tamarisk. From there the route followed the coastal path eastwards dotted with beautiful purple sea thrift and yellow horned poppies which were in full display.

As a special bonus several rare Granville Fritillary butterflies were seen fluttering around with their unique markings. The rocky outcrops featured many coloured lichens amongst other coastal plant species clinging to the rock crevices. Dave also provided information on the WW2 St Lawrence RAF radar station, the foundations for which are still in place.

The walk terminated at the Sugarloaf headland and all expressed their gratitude to Dave and Hazel for such an interesting experience.
