7/10/09 - Village Hall News

It was announced by the Chairman at a Management Committee meeting that Alan Stovell of Pine Gap,Old Park Road,St.Lawrence has agreed to take over the position of Treasurer of the village-hall from Terry Ward who will be resigning in December 2009. Decorating of toilets and lobbies and repainting the railings has been carried out with an award from the Hallmark Scheme which requires the hall be maintained at a certain standard.
The necessary quotations have been received for the repair of the bell-tower and it is hoped that some funding will be available.

5/10/09 - Christmas Party - Full Details

Full details of this years Christmas Party on the revised date of 18th December can be found on the Whats on Page.

2/10/09 - No Cold Calling Zone

Following an unfortunate incident in our Community, this scheme received unanimous approval at the AGM of our Neighbourhood Watch earlier this year when Trading Standards were invited to give a talk about it.  Cold calling was also the only subject discussed by residents of St. Lawrence with IWC’s Environment and Neighbourhood Officer when he attended the Community Association’s Drinks event in January.  I, too, have had quite a number of residents discuss this with me.

The aim of the scheme is to assist and protect those within our Community who are most vulnerable, and indeed provides us all with the confidence to deal with uninvited callers at our door.  It should be stressed though that it does not discourage legitimate businesses from leafleting or leaving catalogues.

I was therefore very pleased that Ventnor Town Council has provided a budget this year to bring No Cold Calling Zones to Ventnor, again following concerns from many residents within the whole area.  It has been agreed that these will be taken forward in St. Lawrence and Upper Ventnor where a number of incidents have also occurred.

An information pack will be delivered to every household within our Village towards the end of October/beginning of November, and we hope that everyone will read them and place the yellow and black sticker from the pack in a prominent position.  This will hopefully then give a strong message and help to keep rogue traders out of St. Lawrence.

Anyone who is willing to assist in distributing the packs and giving a short explanation of the scheme to each resident, please telephone me, Susan Scoccia, on 852240.

30/9/09 - Crisis Averted

TREASURER

WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT ALAN STOVELL HAS KINDLY AGREED TO TAKE OVER FROM TERRY WARD AS TREASURER TO ST LAWRENCE VILLAGE HALL.

  K J LEONARD
  CHAIRMAN
  ST LAWRENCE VILLAGE HALL
  MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

12/9/09 - CRISIS

After ten years in the position of Treasurer to our Village Hall Terry Ward will be resigning at the year end. The Committee wish to thank Terry for the excellent job he has done over the past decade.

The Management Committee of St Lawrence Village Hall is now urgently seeking someone who can take on this key role. We would point out that there is no requirement for the post of Treasurer to be undertaken by a professional Accountant.

We cannot emphasise how important this position is to the financial stability of your Hall and if the position is not filled before the year end the hall may have to close.

If you are interested please contact Keith on 855467 or Judy on 852813

31/8/09 - Village Cider Press - 1st Attempt

We were planning to "christen" a new cider press this afternoon, unfortunately not 100% successful . . .

Enormous forces are required! Soft fruit ok - apples a bit iffy?

Produced about an eggcupfull of juice, from a plastic bag full of  apples.

A number of problems - hydraulic jack (borrowed from work) didn't!

Adjustable cross member not strong enough.

Temporary bolts ditto.

"Wrong sort of apples"?

Hope for better next weekend?

Will be available for general use, contact us at Maple Cottage, Seven Sisters  Rd.  Tel 857015

30/7/09 - Well Dressing

Another successful well dressing was blessed last Saturday week , by the Rev. Anne Faulkner and the Rev. Caroline Baston Arch Deacon of the IOW, when some 30 or so residents turned up to see the well dressing for 2009. The theme this year was Geoff Hurrions idea and the design was created by Jamie Fothergill.

The Eco Island theme incorporated a carbon footprint, a re-cycling bin, a tree, and a wind turbine. Many thanks must go to our dedicated dressers, June, May, Judy, Geoff, Lynnette and Margaret and to all those who visited, helped and had a go. We had a record number this year. Special thanks to the Noyes family, who own the well and let us take over their garage each year to do the dressing and to Jill Fothergill who co-ordinates the whole event. Apologies to those folk who viewed the dressing after Sunday, the wind turbine was eaten by our furry friends and was past repairing! (good job somebody likes them!)  Look out for Whitwells well dressing in a few weeks time and dont miss ours next year.
